RE: [RC] Helmet stories - Libby & Quentin Llop DVMI was wearing my Tipperary helmet when I dropped that 1000# round bale on my head last week. I had no head or neck injury which I attribute to the helmet. It could only do so much however. I am going to help the editor of our local newspaper with an editorial about the importance of wearing protective grear while engaging in recreational sports. I live in a county with a lot of horseback riders, sadly, very few wear helmets but the group of ladies I ride with. The local group of junior riders refuse to wear helmets, despite one of their drill team members nearly getting killed when her horse reared on pavement and she hit her head.....we also have a local woman, mother of two teenage children who went off a 20 ft. ledge last weekend on an ATV, and was not wearing a helmet...now in coma....and at a local rodeo a year ago a young man with two small kids was bucked off, hit his head and died immediately....just too many stories like that. At a recent clinic where everyone rides Western, a juvenile and I were the only two wearing helmets. After hearing the stories about helmets and falls, it didn't even bother me to be "different". A week after the clinic, I fell off my horse and the back of my head hit the ground hard. Helmet did it's job. The muscles on the sides of my neck and abdomen were very sore the next day (something I don't understand), but never even got a headache.
