Re: [RC] Trailer maintenance addendum - Dyane SmithHi, Ed, Great post! Very useful. I would add one thing. After my recent and so far futile truck search, I would add that the tow vehicle needs to have enough GVWR to handle pin weight if you have a gooseneck (I don't have a heavy tag-along so I don't really understand how it works with those). The new trucks can pull whole city blocks, but the payload is very limited because the GVWR has remained the same for years, but the trucks weigh more. Anyway, I am convinced that safety requires that you remain in the neighborhood of your capacity there also. Tires. If you don't use your trailer much, the tires will most likely rot before the tread wears out. Inspect every spring for cracks, tread separation, ply separation. If in doubt, have them professionally inspected, or replace every 4 or 5 years. Tires kept out of direct sunlight when not in use will last longer. 2. Records. I can never remember when I did what to which trailer. I put labels on the back side of tack doors. When I do anything I write it down. Looking at the labels was what reminded me that I was a year over due on wheel bearings.
