[RC] Elytes for Dehydration - Humans Vs Horses - Kristen A Fisher

OK, I have a question. I read research had shown that human sweat has a lower concentration of elytes that human blood, so when humans sweat the electrolyte level in the blood is more concentrated. Giving a person more elytes further concentrates elyte blood levels which can excess fluids to move into the brain with potentially serious complications.

So is the trick to Emergen-C working is that it is in conjunction with liquids?

I was sponsoring a friends son on a very hot ride in South FL some years back. Since it was so hot we were worriend about the horses and Daniel didn't drink enough. On the third loop it hit him hard and by the time we got back in he was in pretty bad shape. His mom wanted him to pull rather than go back out in the heat of the day.

I said let's try this and gave him two large glasses of water with Emergen-C over about a 15 minute period. By 40 minutes he had revived and you could not have kept him from going on. We even raced off for 10'th place and that little sap sucker beat me ;-).  Another Emergen-C and he was off doing what all good 11 year old boys should be doing - pestering 11 year old girls.

More than once I've given people a packet of Emergen-C when they thought they were done and it instantly revived them. Good stuff.

I also realized that I will start carrying my cantle bag again with extra water on those hot rides and at rides that are in remote places I will find room for my cell phone!

I never leave home without Emergen-C.  In a true emergency when water is scarce, I've even ripped open the packet and poured a quarter or half cup of water in it slowly (it fizzes out otherwise) and drank that.  Emergen-C is truly a good thing to have in an emergency such as you described.  My experience when a person gets dehydrated is that more than water is needed, and Emergen-C does the trick.

Anyone on this list use the Emergen-C chewable tablets?  They might be even better to carry.
