Re: [RC] top 5 endurance horses - Merry WicklundThe ApHC allows Appaloosas crossed with registered Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds to be registered with the ApHC. The ApHC is a "Color Breed" as opposed to a "Blood Breed". Thus the outcrossing, which makes no sense to ME because the more you outcross, the less color you are likely to get in your breeding program. The true Foundation Appaloosa breeders are breeding for ALL Appy charistics.
Breeding strictly Appaloosa x Appaloosa. Certain bloodlines carry a gait called the "Indian Shuffle". These are predominatly found in the Pacific NW. We have those lines in our breeding program and we cannot escape the shuffle. You can breed an Appy to a Tenn Walker, and you probably will get the walking horse gait......but you won't get the Indian Shuffle. IMHO that is a "copout" and how many years will it take to lose the shuffle completly.
"Breeders, do not pamper, spoil or corrupt him. Keep him virile, tough and speedy. Improve, if you can, his fine disposition, crowd his staying capacity, enlarge his field of activity, so his stamina and versatility will continue unequalled and unchallenged throughout the world." - Robert L Peckinpah
The award you refer to is probably the Medallion award. The minimum requirements are seven 50 mile rides. Endurance or CTR. The 350 miles must be completed by the end of the ride year, or you have to start over.
Sorry, I didn't mean to get so carried away. I must have way too much time on my hands right now. LOL
