Cool subject! I did a training ride last Sunday
(Virginia, 90, very humid). For the first time my horse started panting --
his pulse was around 80, but his respiration was 120. Really breathing
hard. We stopped under a tree to stand in the shade for awhile. My
question is ... is it better to stop, loosen the saddle and stand in the shade
until breathing returns to normal, or to walk until breathing returns to
normal. Unfortunately we were not near any water at that point, or I would
have sponged him off (which I did at every stream we
crossed).

ridecamp Subject: [RC] sweating humidity
It is very difficult for a horse to cool properly
when it is hot as well as humid. Putting water on the horse becomes very
important as well as having a well conditioned horse as well as riding the
ride wisely. Jeanie
