[RC] Saddle conditioning with vegetable oils - Linda Cowles

Hi Folks,

Olive oil. Wonderful stuff.

I recommend it to my saddle customers as a light oil, with Passier
Lederbalsalm for deep conditioning.

As a heads up on using olive oil!

I sell new and used saddles (moving 10 to 20 saddles a month with 90 -130 new
and used in stock) and I have had *at least* 12 saddles come in for resale with
rotten stitching... falling apart. All of the folks consigning theses saddles
used vegetable based oils, most said "olive oil".

Did the olive oil make them fall apart? No scientific study was done (grin) but
that was the common denominator, and I've been told by several custom saddle
makers that cotton stitching subjected to repeated oiling with vegetable oil
will rot. Oddly enough, I'm *also* told that many western saddles / hides are
initially treated to a olive oil dip! don't know if it's a different type of
thread or the fact that it was a one-time deal....

But after seeing so many fine saddles ruined? I won't risk it! Three of the
saddles were Circle Y's, two were Crates and six were high quality English
(Crosby, Kieffer and Courbette).

There are several super leather products that are much more effective than
these oils, and they are guaranteed to be safe for the stitching. I've got a
reputation for being tight with money, and I still use Leather Therapy products
to clean and restore saddles for resale. I top them off with Leather New or a
similar liquid glycerin to seal the oils in.

I've heard that Lederbalsalm is VERY good as well.

Good luck! Linda

There was some posts awhile ago claiming certain oils would rot thread.
That is not so. That said, I would not put veg. oil on leather. It
has
enough unsaturation to form a gel when exposed to air. I don't think I
would want that in my leather.
