[RC] ways to know you are ready for a 100 miler - Ed Kilpatrick

i read this old quote from yogi berra somewhere, "ninety percent of the game is half mental."   i havent done 100 yet, but a couple of 75s.  for me it was just getting a mindset that we can do this, just gotta keep chugging along until we get it done. i also think that for the rider, when you pass the halfway point of the ride, you can just kind of think, well, it is downhill from here! (even though the last 49 miles might all be UPHILL!)  :-)
the suggestions on the level of fitness for the horse have been on target, i would say.  if you can consistently finish 50 miles in 7 hours and your horse is in pretty good shape, then i think you can do 100.   set a reasonable target time and pace, then try to stick to it.   ed
