[RC] the distance is not the problem - Jonni Jewell

The beauty of the 25 miler is, when done properly, there is less risk to
the horse's health. <<<

Anyone have the statistics of horse deaths in horse racing? You
know....where they only run a mile and a quarter or so....... I mean, it
must be MUCH less than endurance, since they go such a short distance.......
(yes, I'm being sarcastic)

It is not the distance that causes the problems......horses can have health
problems running a flat track for a mile, or doing a 100 mile ride.

It's one of the reasons why I wish we made it mandatory that a horse
experience at least one LD before moving up. Heck, if a horse cannot
complete 25 miles it has no business attempting a 50.<<<<<

There are riders who can start horses in endurance very well doing a 50
mile a day multi-day ride for the horses first ride. <gasp> Imagine that? A
horse never doing a 25, and going to a ride and doing more than one 50 mile
day during a 5 day time frame. In fact, there are quite a few riders who
PREFER to start horses in such a manner for the sport of endurance.

We can do our best to educate new riders in the sport to be prepared, to
have success at their first rides. But we also have seen, that even riders
with some of the highest mileage, can lose a horse at a ride. It is NOT the
distance that causes problems.
