It would all depend on the
circumstances. If there was nothing wrong with the foal, I would want to
wait until they are several weeks old and pretty steady on their legs and then
only if you could haul the mom in one stall and the foal in another and maybe
even have someone in the trailer with them. If you haul them in one stall
(which I have seen done sucessfully), you run the risk that the mare will
accidently step on the baby.
On the other hand, we had a foal born with
problems and it was a matter of getting him down the mountain to the vet or lose
him. We loaded his mom when he was less than an hour old and I rode with
the baby and actually held him cradled in my arms so he couldn't lurch
around.

How soon after foaling is it advisable to haul a foal a long distance
(say, an hour and a half)? Seems like it might be a stressful scenerio, and
I'd guess they should be several months old, but I've heard of people hauling
pretty young.
