Re: [RC] Strangles vaccines - Maryanne Stroud GabbaniStrangles in Egypt is an equine "childhood disease" in that we don't have a vaccine for it, and from what I read of all the problems with vaccines and such, I think I'm glad. Most of our horses come down with a case of strangles sometime in their first 18 months, during which time we monitor temperatures and watch them closely for any problems, but otherwise we do nothing but try to isolate them as much as possible. My latest filly, Diva, who is about a year now, just came down with a case, showing a runny nose and the signature swollen glands in the throat. Since all of the other horses have had strangles, I didn't bother to isolate her, but we did make sure that she was eating, drinking and not running a serious fever.I'm sure that at some point some enterprising vet will import strangles vaccine so that he can charge us a fortune for it, but I'm pretty happy with the way it's handled now. I haven't heard of anyone's horses having any serious repercussions as long as the monitoring was done properly and they weren't stupid and administered antibiotics.
