I sure don't see piling on additional prizes would help.
Fewer than 500 people accounted for all the starts in
100's last year. This is out of an organization of over
6000 members. It's sure difficult to justify additional
rewards directed a such a small precentage of the
memership.

500 out of 6000 ( just over 8%) sounds a pretty big number to me. I
don't have the numbers available, but judging from my perusal of the
literature and my attendance at shows, the percentage of USDF members
that ride Grand Prix dressage is probably closer to about 1-2%, yet
nobody there has any problem with the fact that all the biggest awards
go to Grand Prix riders. Every training level dressage rider is
perfectly comfortable with the concept that Grand Prix riders are better
dressage riders than they are (to suggest otherwise would be considered
absurd). And every training level dressage riders is perfectly
comfortable with the concept that a Grand Prix horse is a much better
dressage horse than a training level horse (to suggest otherwise would
be considered absurd). Nor does this mean that most dressage riders
understand that, while a worthy goal that they can dream about some day,
they will probably never ride Grand Prix. They do not begrudge the
people who do their awards.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with providing the biggest awards to
100 mile competitors. Nor is there anything wrong with acknowledging
that 100 mile horses and 100 mile riders are much better endurance
riders than LD riders and LD horses (to suggest otherwise is absurd :)).

In my experience (22 year worth) most endurance riders are great people who
will go out their way to help and be friendly.
