Re: [RC] [RC] LD catagory....? - Rae CallawaySo, we just drop the Limited. Call it a Distance Ride and the people who prefer to stay in the 25's can be Distance Riders. That's what I call myself anyway when explaining to non-endurance folk (of which there is a LOT of in my area). Then we have a "name" that doesn't have any connotation of "not-quite-good-enough." I don't know if I'll ever move up to 50's or 100's - just don't have the time to condition for those. In any case - Ridecamp is the ONLY place I have ever experienced any derision for the 25 mile distance and most of those comments come from the western regions. Doesn't bother me much. I've got the central, south and entire eastern seaboard to ride in and not ever have to deal with those people. This is the point I've been trying to make for a couple of years now. LD, with a name change to get rid of that word "limited," should be treated as a sport because that is what it's become. We don't have to include the sacred word "endurance" as part of it if it offends the majority, but, let's recognize it for what it's become. Riders, with their horses, do compete in this distance. Quit treating them like children here. It's offensive! It's a sport, by itself, and if AERC doesn't start recognizing it as such there will come a day when they organize and start rides all on their own, without any sanctioning. Recognize it as a competitive sport. Give them points; doesn't have to be endurance points, but, recognize their placings and their achievements. If we don't, they will eventually go elsewhere. cya, HowardFrom: Ridecamp Guest <guest-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [RC] LD catagory....? I would think, if they want to ride for placings, points, and whatever else the "endurance" riders do, then why not? We have placings and points within regional and local clubs. Why not have a different catagory for LD distances, with the same structure? I personally would not be insulted, if rides from 75 miles up were considered in a different catagory from 50's, because they "are" harder. We have some different vet procedures for the LD,if "racing" is a concern, then tighten the criteria. I don't see why people can't have the glory of "doing" whatever distance they want. Making different catagories for the respective distance, would not allow for mixing of points and miles. Maybe some of the regional or local clubs have found a great way to make most everyone happy? This isn't going to "go away" until something is done to appease the human nature of needing to feel "important too". I don't know how the bylaw's get changed, or the mess of changing them. Seems that having the seperate catagories, and using vet criteria to help control some of the issues, could be one possible thought. It appears that some areas may have more trouble then others, with the LD racing. (?) But, racing is inevitable in this sport, regardless of distance. I know that someday (hopefully MANY years from now) I will be thankful to just be able to ride 25 miles, and still be part of this wonderful family of horsepeople. Just my 1.5 cents worth. **eternally clueless, and usually proud of it** :o) ============================================================ The two best drugs to have in your kit are Tincture of Time and a Dose of Common Sense.
