Frank--
Are you saying that the way in which an endurance ride (not the rider) should
be classified ought somehow be measured based on the way in which, or the depth
to which each rider enjoys his or her ride regardless of distance? Or based on
how each individual perceives his or her capacity to endure at a given ride or
distance? You mention that "we have all seen" 50 and 100 mile riders at rides
who are not really endurance riders. What does that mean? That they don't fit
some personal criteria you hold dear that the rest of us aren't privy to?
Unfortunately, how someone cares for or does not care for their horse doesn't
alter the definition of an endurance ride. The definitions currently in use
evolved as a way of identifying and clarifying the amount of stress and
enduring the HORSE has to go through, not so much the rider.
What you have said is very eloquent and reaches something in all of us, but
it is highly subjective, and not substantial fuel for the debate of whether to
reclassify LD as an endurance ride, at least as it is currently defined for
logistical purposes in our bylaws.
If, as you say, one measure of a true endurance rider is being able to
appreciate their miles long after they have been ridden, how could a few extra
mileage points garnered by reclassifying LD measurably enhance such a high?
Wouldn't a points monger have completely missed the "point" as well? Bruce

win at this sport. You take a horse and race him for a
short time and then find a new horse or you can take one horse , do the
homework and spend many miles and years enjoying that horse.
