Re: [RC] wet foods - Susan Garlinghouse, DVMI have a Shagya mare who can't eat beet pulp. I know it's not supposed to happen, but it makes her really hyper/fidgety and she doesn't act right. I've experimented with it several times and it's not my imagination--she really can't eat beet pulp. Okay, I believe you. <g> However, does the beet pulp you've been feeding contain molasses (it'll say so on the feed tag)? That might be causing the trouble rather than the beet pulp itself. If it really is the beet pulp itself, than no worries. As already suggested by other ridecampers, you can soak down hay cubes, almost any of the commercial pelleted feeds, including senior feed, wheat bran if you absolutely must. I'm not a fan of wheat bran, but better your horse eat something at a check rather than nothing at all. There are usually better alternatives. Even just plopping a flake of hay into a bucket of water before you give it to your horse will add some moisture, as will handing out some "green" feeds---a few minutes of grazing whenever the opportunity presents itself, or handing out carrots. Ten pounds of fresh carrots is equivalent in energy to a pound of grain plus a gallon of water and that aint nothing to sneeze at. Good luck!
