[RC] endurance dogs - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Nan Bodine Shahtani@xxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== From: Suzi Maiorisi Sent: Saturday, January 10, 2004 6:01 AM Subject: Re: [RC] 25 miler dogs I'm amazed that all the Arabian moms and dads haven't looked into the = Arabian breeds of dogs - the sighthounds...Afghans (well, ok, there is = the hair issue!) but the sleeker model the Saluki is a fabulous dog that = runs like the wind has more hair than a greyhound (on his ears, tail and = feathering on the legs) and can go all day and all night. If you've = never been to a lure course it's worth finding one and seeing the dogs = that were bred to travel with Arabian horses in the desert. They're = beautiful, smart, can be couch potatoes when the day is done, but are = always willing to take off on a ride. My little old man died a few = years ago and I've missed him terribly. Having had Salukis for 35 years I always felt they should be the perfect dog to run with my Arab, but their inability to unerstand the word "come" makes it impossible to trust them when I'm out riding. Back when we lived in Phoenix, I did take my first Saluki with me when we rode in the desert, but only when we were away from roads. I've had a few since (always males, the bitches are too independent) who could be off leash, one who even went to live with Arab breeders who trained endurance. Unfortunately the nature of the breed is to spot something to chase and tune you out. Kind of "Take a message and I'll get back to you" mentality. That being said, I still love the breed, they are exciting to watch running but here in Virginia there are too many roads.
