Tracy,
I did the Lance camper/3 horse trailer combo for a year or two and it was great.
Just not enough room for the whole family in the camper. I had electric jacks
and the camper was just as easy to load and unload as a gooseneck. I put the
camper on a 3500 dodge dually, 4X4 with air bags. Windy days and big trucks
going by were not a problem. I was able to put my rig anywhere I needed to go.
It is a great set up, for one or two people.
Now we have the BAT (big ass trailer) and I love
it. I have been able to put it everywhere I took the truck and camper and the
whole family fits. I have even had my daughter's riding team from school sleep
in it and that is a total of seven! Now I realize not everyone wants a BAT, but
I would think that any gooseneck is just as easy to hook-up, haul, park and
comfortable as the camper. You do lose the bed of your truck with a camper so
you have to find somewhere else for the extra hay and water tank.
A used camper is usually much cheaper than a
used trailer with living quarters. The camper may or may not need a tag, but it
also doesn't need tires. We went the route of the gooseneck only because we
needed more room. An RV was not an option.
Go to www.horsetrailers-online.com and
just browse the ads. It will give you a good idea of what is out there in the
way of trailers and then you can compare to campers.
The first night it rains, and a cold front comes
through and you are warm, cozy and dry, you will realize no matter what you are
in, a camper or trailer, it was worth every penny! The first hot shower and hot
cup of morning coffee you make without going out in the wet grass and cold air,
will make you kiss your rig! And if you have a generator and air-conditioning on
a 95 degree night, well you'll know you died and went to heaven. I know that is
not "camping" anymore, but I don't care. My tent was put to good use, the dogs
sleep in it.
