[RC] Countdown to Tevis Part 3? - CowgirgoofHi All, For those of you who wanted to keep up with my training for Tevis; here's the latest scoop... Miles and I finished the Jennings Boogie 50 last night at 6:00! It was Mile's first one-day 50, although he has over 1500 miles in 3-day CTR 100's,50's, 35's and 25's. Since it was his first ride of the season, I decided to ride it slow and steady taking all the time he and I needed. I paired up with Jean Shaw on her mule Taffy, since it was their first 50 too. We thought we went out near the end, but several riders passed us on the first loop. By the second loop, we knew we were probably going to finish last. There were about 40 horses in the 50. The terrain there is very flat, but with plenty of sand. I took alot of "ribbing" about how slow I was riding and comments like, "if I want to ride Tevis I'd better get going", were flying around. But I know my horse and I have this season carefully laid out. The last thing I wanted was to risk injury on his first ride this year. We both stayed real positive all day, even though the temperatures reached near 80! (good Tevis prep!). My horse vetted with all A's across the board except for a couple of A-'s. He still seemed to have more gas than I'd like, but he got better and better as the day went on. He ate like a hog, and started drinking good on the second loop. I tried mixing Pro-Bi with the Ride Rite electrolytes from ABC, and he did well on that. Overall, I was very ecstatic last night at the finish as I really feel that in 7 months I can get this southern horse to the mountains of California and be ready for that trip to Auburn!
