[RC] GPS at rides - Michael Maul

In response to:"Yes, it's legal unless the ride manager has made some rule against it. I can't imagine WHY, but it probably is their prerogative to ban them. "

This is posted as a personal view. I can understand having additional rules for the safety of rider and horse. Examples include "Helmets required" at the Texas Grasslands ride and "Shoes required" at very rocky rides. I can also understand additional rules set by the hosting facility.

The preface to the rules online at the AERC site states "Additional measures may be taken by any ride to provide greater safety for equine and rider."

I have more difficulty with a rule like "No GPS allowed". Some members view this as a safety backup for themselves if they get lost. I can understand that ride managers might not want the hassle of arguing about how long the trails is but given that there can be significant inaccuracies in GPS tracking - I would expect most riders to already know this.
