Several companies make a loose salt/mineral mix.  I put some in buckets and put them in each horse's stall.  I don't put e'lites in grain unless at a ride.  You can get the loose mineral salt at your feed store. 
 
The reason many folks use the loose salt is because a horse has a smooth tongue while cows have rough tongues.  The blocks are made for cow's rough tongue while the loose salt is better suited for a horse's smooth one.

I do e-lyte my horse at rides.  The mixture I have come up with seems to work.  I also have a salt block in my trailer that my horse licks on both going to and coming from a ride.  But was just curious about the loose salt.
