Re: [RC] LD BC - heidiI've also seen some of the LD riders that race in our region. They usually pass me on trail and/or catch up with me at the first VC. There are some that the horses look good, but there are others -- one in particular who has won several LDs recently -- that don't look so good. In some ways having an LD BC judged out of the TT might be good for these folks that have horses that are over-ridden -- IF they care about the BC award that is -- because they'll need to take better care of their horses to win BC. One of the things that I've always done with BC is announce ALL the scores, starting from the bottom up. This gives recognition to folks who almost made it--if you have three or four horses with scores within a handful of points, that is a great compliment to those riders that just about got it. But it also serves the purpose of quietly underscoring the fact that the folks such as you mention above really did NOT take very good care of their horses. People are not dumb--when a horse is in first place, and has the lowest BC score (sometimes by 100 or more points), that speaks volumes. And sometimes that also motivates those racers to do better! They are embarrassed to have their names called first, when the scores are read from the bottom up, and their scores are decidedly inferior to what the other riders got. There are just SO many things like that which one can do with BC to quietly and subtly educate riders--it is a GREAT tool, if vets will just use it to its full advantage!
