RE: [RC] White Hairs-Saddle Fit Question - Laurie UnderwoodHow about another back question, then? A few nights ago I noticed my mare had a raised, dry spot on her back, just to the left of her spine. It looks like a scab, but there is no blood, just dry crusted skin in one nickel-sized spot. She is not sore on it at all. I've logged a good deal of conditioning miles and ride miles on Lil this year, although the last two weekends I could not ride because I was out of town or the weather was lousy. Lil is also a lesson horse and is typically ridden by newbie riders about 6 times a week for a half an hour at a time -- walk, jog. I ride in a Toklat woolback high profile pad with an Abetta endurance saddle. I've been using the woolback pads for about 6 months now. I've checked the saddle and don't find anything loose or protruding. Since I am a very right-side dominant rider, I am always conscious of my weight distribution and I always check my pad after I ride for wear patterns. They seem to be consistent on both sides and Lil's back is 100% wet. I also always check her back for soreness. Anyone have any ideas about this? It happened before you got the horse. I put white hairs in my horse's summer coat last year. They went away this winter and are now coming back , since he is shedding out. I would not have known if someone had not told me. My NEW saddle did not do this. It is just a residue of the old marks. They just recently showed up when she shed out her winter coat. I see them on both sides of the loin behind the withers. I know that they are likely due to a problem with saddle fit. My question now is which saddle? I just purchase her in December and have been trail riding on a fairly regular basis for the past four months. We've done one 25LD and a 20 mile training ride. Otherwise only about 10 miles/week average. How quickly do the white hairs appear with a poor fitting saddle? I didn't notice any white hairs in the saddle area when I baught her but could they have been masked by her heavy winter coat? Assuming it is due to my current saddle and I fix the issue will the white hairs go away? Thanks in advance for the advice, Pete and Ladyhawk in TX __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
