Re: [RC] [RC] Horizontal Hoof Crack - Maggie MieskeTuff Stuff is always a good idea. We use it when we shoe...helps fill in around the nails and looks nice, too...and when we have been working in sand or really dry trail. It's a good product that we recommend. The only thing to be aware of when it grows out is that if it's fairly long and you aren't shoeing, it might crack off before you trim it off. But it's not a big deal. You won't find the mysteries of the universe in there, I am afraid. :)Now, Howard, I thought you were one of those barefoot bums.....how come you're now a "horse shoer in training"? :) (all barefoot proponents please note the smiley face before getting all offended!!!). ONe of my horses has had one on both fronts for almost 8 months. It's almost down where I can file it completely away. I'm dying to see what it looks like in there after all this time. There are several products on the market to fill this in with. Some farriers will tell you not to use them, some will use them. I've used them for fear of a bad looking ring getting worse and I've had good results doing so. The horse has never come up lame because of the rings. There are several products for this in the horse catalogues; you might even be able to get one at your feed store. If not, while you're waiting for one to come in the mail, I'd get Tuff Stuff and start putting that on. Just make sure you don't apply it to the coronet band. Unless the horse is off, I wouldn't let this stop you from attending a ride. I'm sure your farrier has something to fill it in with and your horse should be fine. I'd still order some hoof filler so you have it on hand if you need it. cya, Howard (horse shoe'r in training)From: Kari Hanes <khanes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Reply-To: khanes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx To: ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [RC] Horizontal Hoof Crack Date: Fri, 23 Apr 2004 19:12:31 -0400 Last night after a training ride I noticed a crack going horizontal at the top of my mares hoof, about 1/4" away from coronet band. I can't believe I didn't see this before now. I go over her three times a week, but due to my father in laws cancer surgery haven't ridden her in five days. It doesn't seem to bother her movement at all. I'm worried about my first ride of the year May 9, should I even take her? Is there some kind of sealer or something I should put on it? It's not very deep or wide but is about 1" long. My farrier can't come until May 4. Any suggestions?
