Is it possible they're just "Bend Or" spots?  These are like

Birdcatcher spots, only they are black instead of white.

They are named after "Bend Or", another famous TB.

Sure hope that's all it is!  Magnum has a few Birdcatcher spots,

but I hadn't heard of Bend Or spots until the last Equus came.

I think I saw an article or question about them in a recent issue.
