Re: [RC] [RC] ? Hide the Horse Food - Maggie MieskeMalik has become "conditioned" to getting that apple or carrot when he first arrives at a check and he will usually pulse down almost immediately if he hasn't already. I learned that lesson a couple years ago when we came into the check in a pack and decided to just present as he is always down so fast. He wouldn't come down. He "hovered" at 70. As the vet was listening to him, Nelson let him put his head down for a bite of grass...his pulse started to drop immediately. The vet said to let him keep eating and he was down in seconds. So, now he gets a snack and some grass or a bite of hay before we present! :) Miles of smiles, Maggie http://arabianquest.com/samaha_arabians.htm "So many of our dreams seem impossible, then improbable, then inevitable." At one ride, my horse hung up at 80 bpm at the vet check, refusing to come down... Diane Fruth started shoving whole carrots in his mouth, and he dropped to criteria almost immediately! That shoots the theory that they won't pulse down if they are eating... I think in his case, he was so worried about the other horses coming and going, they kept sending his heart rate back up. When his mind was on food, he relaxed. chris --- Cowgirgoof@xxxxxxx wrote:My horse won't drop if he's eating... Now I've heard recently it may only have to do with what position the head is in; ie: head down, pulse up, head up, pulse will come down... Any thoughts on this?
