I have found mohair string girths work great.
The cowboys have been using them for decades and they do help with alot
of gall problems. I have even found some nice buckle dressage length
ones. Montana Cincha makes some very nice hand tied mohair girths and cinches.
They even put breast collar rings on them. You can find them on the web. They
are really nice. I just wish they would put elastic on them, then they would
be *perfect*.
I
was having trouble with girth galls on my thin skinned mare. I was
using a professional choice neoprene girth and was starting to see a
gall. I put on a wool cover for one ride and then really had a
sore. She has a big walk and what I believe was happening was the skin
between her elbow and the girth was getting pushed together and rubbed. The
thick wool cover made it worse. I switched to a wintec english girth
that was narrower than the professional choice and has rounded edges not
square. I also used body glide in that area until the sore
healed. I have not had problems again but if I am going on a long ride
I use the body glide behind her elbows. I also use it on the side of her
tail if I use a crupper. Knock on wood haven't had problems
since.
