RE: [RC] Ground Control Shoes - kstandeferAs with any other shoe, the trim is what is most important. Second is the application method. In the archives Maggie posted her husband's method for applying these shoes. Using that method and ensuring that the hoof is correctly balanced you should have no problems. I'm using these shoes in combination with my horse being barefoot in between rides. We've only applied them once so far, but applying and removing was easy. The hoof also stayed in great shape. I have a friend who uses them on her 100 mile horses in Int'l competition and swears by them. Her horses hooves have improved while using these shoes. What I like most about them is that they provide the best stimulation for both the bars, frogs and sole of any shoe I've seen. I hope they also let the heel bulbs work a bit more independently (shock absorption over uneven terrain) than metal shoes which should lessen the strain on the ligaments and joints in the hoof/pastern. KS Referenced Post: I know this subject has come up before but I'm wondering if anyone has any long term or additional experience with these shoes. I read the reports of hoof wall breakdown on the archives: was that for horses who had similar problems with steel shoes or for horses without problems? My horse's feet are great right now and he is more comfortable barefoot and if we weren't doing CTR he would not need shoes at all. I do not want to create a problem with his feet -- I do like the idea of allowing his foot to flex more freely, but not at the expense of the hoof wall. I find Easy Boots are awkward and I've heard conflicting reports about chaffing and irritation with Old Mac's so I'm not sure which way to go. He's done okay with steel all around but he's telling me he's more comfortable without shoes. My farrier is coming in a couple of weeks. Thanks for any advice.
