Re: [RC] Fw: Horse trails at Lake Berryessa -- PLEASE READ! - Karen SullivanI will get a letter going signed from all the Lake County riders I know. I met Carol some years ago while working on BLM Trail days out at Cache Creek....and didn't follow up. She was working on the Berryessa project then.. and I met her again when involved in the addition of Wilderness areas to Lake Co. Mike Thompson is VERY supportive of this sort of thing, so it is well worth writing him. Hello Gang: I met Carol at last week's Calif. Trails and Greenways Conference at Folsom. She brought up the subject of new trails planned to go around Lake Berryessa and to connect existing public lands. She said that she had not had a single letter in support from the horse community and that she really wanted to hear from us!!! Needless to say, I was taken aback; I had not heard of this project. I think that it was a bit of mis-communication as Carol had never heard of AERC or Calif. State Horsemen's Assn. All she's asking for is a simple indication of interest and support of the concept from horse people, clubs and groups and individuals too. Carol has explained it very well, in her message below, with lots of ideas and suggestions. PLEASE, PLEASE, take 5 minutes to write! (Carol said that she has had LOTS of letters from the mt. bikers....) This is a great chance to get in on the ground floor and help this project along! Can you *imagine* having a new area with 150 miles of trails to ride, and campsites along the way, in one of the most beautiful areas of California????? Jeanne, could you please put this on Ridecamp? Thanks much to everyone!! Connie B. ----- Original Message ----- From: Carol A. Kunze <ckunze@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, March 28, 2004 4:50 AM Subject: horse trails at Lake BerryessaIt was nice to meet you this weekend. As I mentioned, this is an opportunity to support the development of equestrian trails at Lake Berryessa in eastern Napa County, which in turn would tie in to equestrian trails we would like to develop in the surrounding 600,000 acres of the Blue Ridge Berryessa Natural Area. THE DEADLINE IS APRIL 22. Two types of comments are needed. One is from various equestrian organizations. The other is from equestrians themselves. You can find a map of the proposed Lake Berryessa shoreline trail at http://www.berryessatrails.org/trail.htm The map shows only one short equestrian trail. There is greater potential for equestrian trails. Letters from equestrian organizations: 1. Support public access and use of public land (most overnight sites are exclusive vacation trailer sites. the contracts for these areas are all expiring. only if they are removed and replaced with facilities for the public are we going to get the 150 mile shoreline trail) 2. Support quiet areas around the lake (no motor and 5 m.p.h. area, equestrians like to be out in nature, not riding next to roaring power boats and jet skis, etc.). See our proposed zones at http://www.berryessatrails.org/zmap.htm) 3. Support public instead of commercial campgrounds, and the need for separate horse camps 4. Support an equestrian trail on the east shore (this is important as there are no concessions on that side, it's all ranches, and it would be miles of trails). This has the best potential for a long trail. It is important to mention it as the east side ranchers may oppose, so strong support is needed 5. Support trails particularly where needed to connect to other equestrian trails which are part of the regional BRBNA regional trailsystem6. Comments on how horses tread lightly environmental-wise would be good. Attaching any studies, reports on impact would also be good. 7. We are asking that no final decisions be made on what trails should be where (hiking, biking, etc.), but that the general concept of serving the three main user groups be adopted, with details to be worked out in conjunction with decisions involving the greater regional trail system and development of a masterplan. The need and location for horse camps should also follow from that. 8. An offer to participate in trail design, development and maintenance would be good. If you want me to review anything that would be fine. A couple other maps of interest. Map of Napa County showing public and protected land http://napalandtrust.org/map_large.html Blue Ridge Berryessa Natural Area http://www.brbna.org/mapintro.htm Letters from equestrians themselves can just say they want to ride out here. More detail as per above is good, but this is where it will simply help to show numbers. The Sierra Club has an easy email form with pre-printed text that can be edited. A form like this, and sending the URL out to all members in an alert to get them to email in would also be good. In the alternative, you could just send people to the Sierra Club form and have them edit the text to discuss equestrian trails. http://www.redwood.sierraclub.org/napa/conservation/lakeberry/comment.shtml WHERE TO SEND: On this page you will find, mail, fax and email information. It is a VERY good idea to copy Congressman Mike Thompson on your letter. It would also help me to know of any organization letters that are send. I am keeping trail of the list of supporters. I am leaving Sunday for the day, and then again Monday morning through Wednesday.
