Re: [RC] RC: RE Electrolytes/dehydration - heidi

There is a wide variety of opinions on how to electrolyte
your horse.

Well, actually, there are a wide variety of horses, all with different
needs, ranging from no electrolytes to a lot of electrolytes.

The bottom line is don't electrolyte just because so-and-so does. Learn
what YOUR horse's own needs are, and e-lyte accordingly.

As a ride vet, I've seen horses get in trouble from not enough, and I've
seen horses get in trouble from too much.

Rome wasn't built in a day. General Lee's cavalry did some pretty
astounding things in the Deep South in the summer's heat with fit horses,
good roughage (and often not enough of it), and good horsemanship--but
with no modern e-lytes. Get your horse fit, figure out what is right for
YOUR horse with some experimentation in submaximal conditions, and go from
there!

Common sense should also be a part of the decision making process. If you
see someone who doesn't have any, hand them your tool box.
