[RC] Selenium question for the Vets - Suzanne Boyd

Hi,
I live in an area(NE Ohio) that is generally adequate in soil selenium
levels but I understand there are some areas here that are deficiant. I feed
mostly grass hays, a little alfalfa, all local-grown, and lots of pasture. I
currently have 4 horses, all eating the same diet. (lots of shredded beet
pulp and a little Buckeye sweet feed, free choice ABC minerals, Buckeye
Grass-Plus minerals and loose salt) 2 of the horses are currently being
conditioned for endurance/RAT, one is a 20 yr. old retired endurance horse,
now trail horse, and the 4th is a young AQHA mare. Would it be reasonable
for me to have one(or both) of the endurance horse's selenium levels
checked, and based on their levels, either supplement all of them or not? Or
should I go ahead and have each horse's level checked? Does this make sense?
Or am I just trying to find ways to lose sleep at night?!?!

FYI, I attempted to have my vet draw blood on one of these horses for a
selenium level last summer,,,but he informed me that it was unneccesary and
he'd never heard of anyone even wanting this done.(I can draw the blood
myself now :P) If anyone has any performance horse vet reccomendations in
the NE Ohio, that would also be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Suzanne
