Re: [RC] fractured splint bone - heidiIt is well worth it rather than the "wait and see if it would heal" method that many people opt to do. I have to agree that the "wait and see" method is rarely successful with fractured splint bones. There is little circulation in the end of the splint bone, so it usually does not get a good knit--just a fibrous union that forever has some motion in it, and constantly causes an irritation. The "wait and see" approach can cause increasing amounts of scar tissue and calcification, making it that much more difficult to remove the thing later on down the road. And yes, most horses heal uneventfully from removal of the distal broken fragments and have no impairment of future soundneess--IMO best to just get it done and over with.
