Re: [RC] fractured splint bone - rides2farCouldn't find very much in the archives, and I am wondering if anybody has experience with this and was able to ride their horse in endurance rides after this surgery. My horse who had already proven he wasn't for endurance (100% pull rate in 4 outings) heard that a potential buyer was on the way and fractured his rear splint bone, up high. Same symptoms as yours. Looked like a small hole. EXTREMELY lame. Vet knew me and prescribed antibiotics over the phone. I thought I was picking pieces of shavings away from the hole and realized they were actuall *bone* chips. :-P X-rays looked like a shattered cannon to me and I started crying and my vet laughed at me assuring me it wasn't the least bit career ending. Jommeh had the surgery which I video taped. You should too, great for gatherings. Very interesting to see your horse come in hanging upside down from an an overhead track by hobbles on all four feet. :-P This was in 1994 I think... maybe 1993. Seems like it cost me around $800. The surgery took hours with 4 people in there so it didn't seem like that much money considering. They stapled him up and used a ton of wrap. He had to stay confined in a stall for months it seems but that particular horse loved his stall and didn't mind. Like I said, he had already proven he wasn't an endurance horse, but I do have a picture of him winning a ribbon at a local hunt show with the shaved IV area still showing on his neck. When I sold him 3 or 4 months later the vet who did the surgery recommended him to the buyer even though they told him they planned to jump him. He assured them it would be no problem. From what I heard they loved him and he worked out great. I still have the bone. Keep threatening to combine it with leather and make a hair barrette. :-P Angie ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
