What good timing for this subject. This month’s issue of Horse Illustrated
has an article on page 40 concerning the Right to Ride bill stalled in the
House of Representatives. Officially known as H.R. 2966 and sponsored by George
Radanovich (R-CA), this bill will keep federally owned lands open to horses. Below
is specific information on the bill from http://www.bchc.com/Documents/Right-to-Ride_HR-2966.PDF
:
“To preserve the use and access of pack and saddle
stock animals on public lands, including wilderness areas, national monuments
and other specifically designated areas, administered by the National Park
Service, the Bureau of Land Management , the United States Fish and Wildlife
Service, pr the Forest Service where there is a historical tradition of such
use, and for other purposes.”
Here is a link to the opposition http://www.blm.gov/nhp/news/legislative/pages/2003/te030930a.htmBasically
they feel a system is already in place that allows for public input and H.R.
2966 is not needed.Perhaps those
of you who have experienced problems first hand in this area can write your rep
and send a copy to the sponsor, George Radanovich. I recall a recent problem in
Georgia aired on
Ridecamp. For address go to www.house.gov and click on “Write Your Representative.”
Even if you have not personally experienced a problem with
trail loss, please take a minute and email your representative and ask that
they co-sponsor the bill. You may
not have a problem today, but there are a whole lot of tomorrows still to come.On a personal level it really makes me
mad that my tax dollars are being spent to keep me out of the land my tax
dollars bought. If you need help with a letter please email me.Please cross post this to other lists. Please, please. please
email your rep and tell them how important HR 2966 is to you on a personal
level. Thank you for your time,
