You can compare the manufacturer's horse power and
torque ratings and get an idea how much power difference there would be at sea
level, but on the top of a mountain you will find a totally different
story.
The diesel is turbo charged. While it looses
some power at altitude, not nearly as much as a gas engine. If I keep the
RPM on my Ford Diesel greater than 2000, it is hard to tell if I am at 10000
feet or sea level. My previous gas engined trucks felt ready to die at
altitude! Of course superchargers can be fitted to gas engines, but no
maker in the USA does for trucks.
