I have a 19 yr old gelding that is a grandson of Poco Bueno (named Marco Poco
Bueno, <cute huh?>) does this thing ever have a late onset? He has never had
any problems other than with the occasional abcess from a bruise. Should I
worry? Just wondering.

Hi Sally,

I can't reply privately because I read the archives.

Anyway, if your horse has Poco Bueno only on one side of the
pedigree you don't have to worry about the disease. It's a
recessive, meaning BOTH parents have to 1) have the gene, and
2) pass the gene to the offspring for the offspring to get the
disease. At this point they think it's directly from Poco
Bueno in something like 90% of the cases that have been found.
So, it may have come from further back in Poco Bueno's pedigree,
but you'd have to have those horses on both sides to get it from
them, just like any recessive trait. :)

It also didn't sound like it was a late-onset disease.

And, yes, cute name. :)
