Re: [RC] Worm Purge - heidiI have a neighbor with a newly acquired horse that seems to be "excreting" worms....they present as bumps and then rupture with wormey egg stuff?? I remember something a while back about "purging"??? You mean erupting through the skin? If so, I'd wait awhile. While these grubs are migrating through the tissue, if you kill them all at once, you can have so much cell lysis that the horse can go into shock from the nasty enzymes let go by the dying larvae. These are actually fly larvae, rather than worms. If the horse has them, this is the time of year that they do this. I'd wait until the horse has worked through this (check with a vet in your area for a "safe" time for your locality) before doing any sort of deworming at all. But--once through this, I would DEFINITELY do a purge, as it sounds likely that this horse has NOT had a good deworming history--the time to have killed these things was in the fall, and since that wasn't the case, there are apt to be all sorts of other parasites hanging around in there, too.
