Re: [RC] horses and weather - Sarah WI'm in Michigan, we have had some cold temps this year. Quite honestly, and I have 4 outside right now - 2 MI born, 2 weanlings brought in from Idaho early January - I have not seen any frost bite. We've been below zero on a regular basis. For shelter, I have a 3 sided lean too, however, my boys tend to hang out in the thick brush grown up in one area of the pasture. I'm not sure what it is exactly. From my experience, getting sap off the horse wasn't an issue because the horse ate the tree before it could get sap on it =). The shelter I have is 10x20, great for 2 horses, somewhat of a problem if there are dominence issues. I keep a tank heater in the tank for unfrozen water... and I don't use a very high watt compared to the tank I have. My problem is my 2yr old keeps taking it out =). None of my boys have a problem with lying down in the snow actually. Most of the time they stand up, but I always see signs of where they've laid down. And the weanlings, who came in from a very mild climate have grown extremely thick coats to compensate for the coldness. Sarah Lansing, MI 1) dealing with frost bite 2) natural shelters -- what types of trees do youprefer? if it'spine/fir, is there any issue with sap getting inthe horses' manes andtails, and, if so, how do you deal with it? 3) run-in sheds...how big and how many for 5horses?4) keeping water unfrozen And finally (at least for now), I was reading thearticle in Equusthis month about horses and sleep. Did anyoneelse read this? Howdoes being out 24/7 in deep snow affect this"lying down" to sleepissue? Do you see any affects? Thanks!!!
