Re: [RC] Deaths, post mortem exam and disposal - Bette LamoreWow, CarolynIf I ever die and come back as a horse, I want to go to YOU!!!! When Explodent finally had to be put down after years of chronic laminitis, which he had when we got him, Dr. Charlie Boles assured me he would send him to a place specially picked out which was on a cliff and overlooked the beach in Pismo. It was years later and Halynov's passing which led me to the discovery that the place Charlie was referring to was the waste disposal site which had a special area for horses (guess Alamo Pintado didn't have the romantic sensitivity and, yes, compassion, of Charlie). There are some things owners just don't need to know. At least I know their spirits are still with me, no matter where their bodies are buried (but I still choose to think of the site as a horse burial grounds, donated by some wealthy patron.) We knew it was coming and I was not going to have her sent to a rendering plant, which until recently was the only option around here (around here is just outside of Boston, MA). We found a creamatorium that handled horses and we got pricing in advance. It was $1,700 to cremate her and $340 for them to come get her. So it cost me over $2,000. Money well spent. I can laugh about it now, but this mare only cost $900 to buy in 1995, and I spent over $200/month the last 3 years of her life in Cushing's meds and special food to keep her weight up. She was the best horse anyone could ever have and I was happy that I was able to provide this to her. -- Bette Lamore Whispering Oaks Arabians Home of 16.2h TLA Halynov who lives on through his legacy Hal's Riverdance! http://www.arabiansporthorse.com Always remember: "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."
