Re: [RC] preventing treatment - Stefffi_c

I've really enjoyed this thread... I want to throw my
ideas in as a "Never Done A Ride Before" newbie. :)
Shooting to go to Biltmore this fall, if my health
allows. I regret not getting into this as a Junior so
I would have more of a hand to hold going through my
rides.

As a newbie, even though I've read the books and web
sites and asked the patient people here on RC (Thanks
Angie, Stagg, and Jim!) tons of questions, I don't
feel prepared to go out and apply what I've learned.
Sitting here are reading is one thing, knowing my
horse is great, but actually going out and _applying_
all the stuff I've learned here to my riding is
something completly different. Here's my ideas --

1) I'd like to see some structured mentoring program.
I know there are mentors one endurance.net, I've
talked to both of them for my state. One was extremely
helpful, but I got completly different info from both
of them. It would be nice if for the first few we had
to be sponsored like juniors; I realize that's asking
alot from the "sponsors", but you guys seem to be very
giving people.

2) For a while some of the breed associations had
programs to get people more knowledgeable, even
offering point incentives for completing certain
courses. If some of you guys could create a "newbie"
course both written and maybe 4 or 5 classroom
sessions and a practice ride, kind of a year long
course, that would be so great. Not make it required
for newbies, but give us extra points, mone or some
incentive for being involved in it.

3) I think that it should be required/highly
recommended for newbie horses to have blood pulled at
rides, pre ride, all VC, and post ride. I know I would
be willing to pay an extra fee until I get my program
worked out; the only alternative to that is bringing
it to my vet back home within 24 hours so he can run
it. It would be good if anyone had the option, but to
require bloodwork for new riders, and riders moving up
in mileage.

4) If the conditional fit to continue thing were to go
on the books, what would the proof be that the rider
was told that? Would it be noted on the vet card? Here
in North Carolina if the rider broke that then they
could likely be charged under the cruelty/abuse laws.
If anybody would actually do that is another story,
but if people stood a chance of being
charged/convicted of abuse, wouldn't they be more
likely to follow the vets orders?

Just my thoughts...
Stephanie
