RE: [RC] Deaths - the list - Bob MorrisSorry John, (The head vet, as an agent of the AERC, might provide the authorization (including authorization to pay any associated fees/expenses). The Head Vet and all of the other Vets are either employees of, or contractors to, the Ride Management. They have no association with the AERC except some form of membership in the Conference. That aside, I think this was the direction that Dr. Baldwin was going with his resolution concerning pre-agreement to open records for education ... which was passed at the last mid-year meeting. The costs of any post-event (be it either treatment and/or death) evaluations might be borne by AERC. The head vet, as an agent of the AERC, might provide the authorization (including authorization to pay any associated fees/expenses). Of course the owner of the eqine may refuse that service, thus withdrawing from the AERCs growing body of knowledge concerning Endurance Riding. johnt At 03:06 PM 2/18/2003, you wrote: Barbara McCrary wrote:I agree that an autopsy of every horse that dies on an endurance ride would be a great thing, but many riders would choose not to pay for it. Any solutions offered? Let's see....how about AERC making it mandatory that therider pay for an autopsy and for disposal of the horse's body and each ride manager involved in such an incident refunding the entry fee to the rider aspartial compensation. That's an interesting proposal. I asked that question to a member of the Vet Committee. The answer was: ----------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- "Not just your opinion...a lot of folks feel that way but the point is the law says you cannot force that nor even treatment. You can tell a rider you can't come to my ride anymore because you wouldn't treat your horse but you can't make them let their horse be treated or make them allow a necropsy. What I am trying to point out to you is that all these things that should or could be done have been discussed over and over in the past. This happens every year, someone comes up with a great new idea except it isn't new at all and those who have been around for all the prior discussions about it tend to brush it off (not saying that is the right attitude)" ----------------------------------------------------------- -------------------- Seems to be this stuff could be included in the Liability Release. You don't agree, you don't get to ride. Sure would like some more opinions here. Bob Morris?
