RE: [RC] Preventing Treated Horses - Bob Morris

First the AERC must have those "surplus funds". The AERC to
my knowledge may have funds in excess of operating expenses
but that does not make them surplus. First, the Conference
needs to have a minimum of a one year operating budget
reserve as well as a reserve to cover replacement of all
operating equipment. Then we can consider a surplus.

What needs to be accomplished at this point, while the
reserves are being obtained, is a well planned program along
with accurate budgets to cover it. I would estimate to have
a successful operation will take two years of planning and
implementation before any results are realized.

Heidi, I think that concept (which I think is a terrific
one) could even
be
distilled down to packed cell and total proteins to just
evaluate pre-ride
hydration level. One of the trends we saw last year in
all the Tevis
panels
drawn was that very few of the horses actually started the
ride fully
hydrated; and also that the hydration curves seemed to be
consistent for
all
the horses

That would be a good start, although at events such as Pan
Ams, etc. that
draw horses from all over the continent, or WECs where they
even fly in, I'd
also sure like to see CPKs, SGOTs (sorry, no caffeine
yet--what do they call
those nowadays), and BUNs.

I also like your idea of using some of the surplus AERC
funds to pay for
bloodwork on any horses that need to be treated.

Heidi
