Re: [RC] Paris International Endurance meeting, from Tony Benedetti - Heidi Smithwe had the opportunity to hear how other countries deal with the problem. Many use a system of graduation requiring the completion of one distance successfully without any pulls in a certain number of rides before stepping up to a greater distance. In the US, we have always held to the wild west approach where you can ride any distance if you have a horse to enter. Maybe it is time for us to look very hard at rider qualifications. Well, I've known riders with mileages in 5 figures that still don't have a clue and likely never will have a clue, and I've known novices that have done their homework and gotten a mentor and just have good horse sense that come "right out of the box" as caring and responsible riders who have a good sense of what to do and how to do it. Sorry, but I'm not a fan of riders OR horses having to "work their way up through the ranks" so to speak.
