Re: [RC] They all only go on "with qualifications" - Jim HollandTruman Prevatt wrote: The question boils down to can a vet favor one rider over another in giving a break, i.e. allowing them to go on for a completion, when he wouldn't give another the same break? I dunno...it's a tough question, but you really can't fault the Vets. They are there to provide a "safety net" for the riders. Bottom line, you are responsible for the welfare of your horse. If you have a track record that demonstrates that you know what you are doing, and ride responsibly, you don't NEED the vet, except as a backup, so why should that be a problem? Let 'em spend their time with the rider who needs help. Last fall at Biltmore, I mentored Penny Sharpe, my buddy from Texas. All kinds of problems. Horse's back a little sore, had a girth gall that required her to ride without a breast collar, rider was tired, etc. Ann Stuart was head vet. Ann don't put up with nothing from NOBODY...great "gut feel". I don't know fer sure, but I betcha she would have normally have pulled Penny in a heartbeat...but she (and Kathy Eichelburger) knew she was riding with me and I have to believe they trusted me to take care of her AND her horse. Penny finished Top Ten and her horse had better vet scores than Sunny. What does that tell you about Vet intuition? Can't say enough about how good they are.
