Re: [RC] Pulse - Punishing non-Arab breeds - Heidi SmithNot any horse will do because they have not been selectively bred for endurance riding traits. For example, some Quarter Horses or Paints or Morgans may never be suitable for endurance and may never make quick recoveries. Doesn't mean individuals within those breeds cannot be just as competitive as Arabs, given it is the right individual for the job. I would submit here, Lysane, that not all Arabs are bred to do the job, either, and it pays to be just as selective when looking for an Arab as when looking for a prospect in another breed. The advantage of Arabs is that there are MORE of them bred to do the job than there are in other breeds, and that even some who are not intentionally bred to do the job are close enough to ancestors who were that they still have not had those traits bred out of them. But I've seen a real decline in the past 20 years of simply being able to pick up "any Arab" to do the job, as Arab show "standards" have gone so far away from the traits one would want for endurance that many Arabs are actually being selected AWAY from "using" traits. Sad. OTOH, more and more breeders are realizing this and are forsaking the fads in favor of breeding horses with good riding traits. Yes, Arabs are the dominant breed in this sport--but don't be fooled into thinking that "just because he's an Arab" he is suitable for the sport....
