I remember a story Maryben told me early on (late '70s) about how a vet (if I remember right, at Tevis) told a rider he would let her go if she would walk the horse the rest of the way. I believe this was from the last check. She got out of sight, galloped the horse in, and it died. I am actually surprised any endurance vets are still falling for the "let the horse walk in" line.
