Re: [RC] [RC] Preventing treatments - Heidi SmithWhat an excellent idea. I have seen so many instances where the Vets will say back off and go in slow and it just goes right on by the rider, and they still compete with the horse for a top ten place. Perhaps that would make an impression on then and then if they continued to over ride the horse, they could be disqualified. Norma Birch Giving advice to a rider whose horse is fit to continue but would benefit from slowing down is one thing. The horse that truly is in jeopardy if he continues at the same rate of speed is something else entirely. In the latter case, the "impression" that needs to be made is simply to disqualify the horse then and there. I used to be a proponent of the conditional continuation concept as well until I saw a horse die as a result. And since many others had similar negative experiences with this (it used to be pretty commonplace, and in some instances, the vet would even confiscate the saddle and let the rider lead the horse in), it became AERC policy to discontinue the practice. Sometimes it pays to pay attention to history--and not go back to repeat the mistakes we've already made.
