Videos & audio
tapes of convention seminars is a great idea & is done by many
organizations. The American Association of Critical Care Nurses holds it's
annual National Teaching Institute over 3 days with multiple seminars going
on every hour to 2 hrs. The prototypes are there for AERC to
develop an educational incentive.
Educational
incentives will assist those seeking education. For the others attending
rides a page or 2 of information with every ride packet might
help.
As for drawing
blood for analysis on horses requiring treatment at rides:
- The rider
whose horse requires treatment pays for the sample.
- The rider is
provided with the results.
Basically, AERC would be initiating a national research study. If you
want to ride an AERC ride, you agree to participate if your horse requires
treatment. The consent form must state the reason for the study -
Horses requiring treatment for metabolic imbalances are at risk for
death, etc. It amazes me that
even among some experienced riders there isn't a clear understanding that
metabolic acidosis and electrolyte imbalance can lead to sudden cardiac death
and that it takes more than IV fluids to get passed that
possibility.
