Re: [RC] Need opinions - Heidi SmithI have always wondered whether it is better to walk or trot to the finish if: 1. It is a very hot day 2. You have 8 or 10 miles to go to the finish line 3. There is no water between where you are and the finish. 4. You feel your horse is tired. Walking in taking two to three hours exposes the horse to a longer period in the heat without water than trotting in taking an hour plus where shade and water are available. One demands more energy for a short period, the other demands less energy for a longer period. I am interested in the opinion of others. Julie Suhr I tend to concur with the posters who urge trotting--but once again, I'll also add that this is another case where a horse with a good brisk walk is an advantage. A horse that will clip along at 5 mph at the walk instead of the average 2.5 or 3 will tend to have some of the advantages of the trotting horse without as much effort. Furthermore, the horse with the brisk walk will allow you to spell him--walk a mile, trot a couple of miles, walk a mile, etc.--and still make good time.
