Re: [RC] Preventing Treatment - Heidi SmithWould like to hear from some of the advocates for the entry exam to hear other side of debate. Thus far all I have heard is the the vet check may run more smoothly if check is done at beginning. What are the arguments for doing at the beginning of the exam and why did the sport evolve in that direction? First of all, I think that entry exams evolved as a convenience, out of lack of any real "feel" for the advantages of having an exit exam instead. Many times, the vets simply instruct riders to come to the vets "at their convenience" during the hold--so many times riders simply go straight to the vet to "get it over with." This gradually evolved as being the expected procedure and the norm. I think the main argument in favor has been pretty well articulated--if the ride is understaffed or the veterinarians are not sufficiently experienced to work at a reasonable rate of speed, exit exams cause bottlenecks. Riders seem to prefer that the bottlenecks eat into their hold time than into their trail time. The horses are the losers in that scenario.
