[RC] Supplementing for Ulcers -- Magnesium Oxide, Neigh-Lox? - Roger RittenhouseThe ulcer issue . I Went through this. I chose to do the scoping. Showed he was clean. Then to insure he STAYED that way, I put him on KER NEIGH-LOX. Used mostly for when we traveled and were in camp. NOT every day at home. Worked great. He ate like a horse and did well on the trip. Since these oral 'feed' supplements are just that- there is NO drug involved - so just use it to be safe. There are other assorted ulcer supplements out there U-Guard -- many- look in Jeffers etc. I think It is fair to look at this as a horse anti-acid - Tums.. I will continue the use of this with all my horses that are going to rides. -- Roger mailto:roger@xxxxxxxxxxx From: RISTREE@xxxxxxx Subject: [RC] Supplementing for Ulcers -- Magnesium Oxide, Neigh-Lox? Wondering if anyone is in a similar boat. Have a gelding who has >1000 miles and has always been a metabolic powerhouse. Eats, drinks, pees, poops and looks plucky about it. In the last couple of years, however, he's had occasions of not wanting to eat at vet checks, getting the stares, and this season, two mild colics at a ride. One before the start (after getting lytes and vetting in) and one after a completion. We suspect ulcers which are aggravated by electrolytes. As do the vets with whom we've discussed the situation. (This is a horse with loads of turnout, an unflappable temperament, and not buted with any frequency at all -- a low risk ulcer horse, frankly.) We're changing some things about electrolyting, but are considering supplementing magnesium oxide to help control the ulcers, and using Neigh-Lox as the ride approaches. Susan G and others, will we be messing with copper absorption by dosing the magnesium oxide, and what would be a safe therapeutic dose? Legal for AERC? Anybody doing it already? Please drop me a line privately if you like. Thanks in advance. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
