Re: [RC] Alfalfa Pellets - Susan GarlinghouseDoes anyone out there know the ration of alfalfa pellets to a flake of alfalfa hay? I know all the dangers of feeding pellets..but I like pellets. The weight of a flake of alfalfa hay can vary widely, so feed both by WEIGHT---nutritionally, five pounds of alfalfa pellets equals five pounds of alfalfa hay, assuming equivalent quality. :-) Had a blister beetle scare before NO THANKS! Okay, but you can get blister beetles in pellets or cubes as well. Also, consider that since feeding/chewing time is less with pellets as compared to long stem hay, the horse produces less saliva and has a higher likelihood of acidic stomach pH and ulcers, if he is otherwise prone to them (the jury is still out on that one for endurance horses).
